Toshiba Satellite L755D 12L

The dark red finish isnt quite to our taste, wed have to admit, but the Toshiba Satellite L755D-12L is certainly distinctive. And no matter whether its pink, orange, purple or turquoise theres no disguising the fact that the Satellite is a very respectable laptop indeed.

The Toshiba Satellite L755D-12Ls WorldBench 6 performance score of 79 is slightly underwhelming, admittedly, though the quad-core AMD A6-3400 APU chips do seem to be somewhat behind the Intel Core i3s and i5s in the performance stakes so it is not an unsurprising score. Theres a generous 6GB of RAM and a slightly less generous 320GB hard disk on offer, too, but the Toshiba really comes into its own as a gaming machine. Notching up frame rates of 17fps in FEAR at maximum settings is a pretty decent achievement and is thanks to the integrated AMD Radeon HD 6520G chip working in tandem with the quad-core processor, using up to 3GB of the systems RAM.

Battery life is perfectly respectable, with 334 minutes of juice at your disposal on a full charge, and at 2.5kg the Toshiba Satellite L755D-12L isnt too much of a problem to carry around with you, even for long periods. If you need to work while youre on the move the keyboard is decent without being outstanding – the keys touch each other and there isnt quite as much travel as wed like. The touchpad is very discrete – youll only really know where it is because of the change in texture as it is at the same level as the rest of the chassis, meaning there are no little crevices for crumbs to get stuck in.

The screen is impressive, with deep, rich colours and sharp definition. Like just about all of the other laptops in the group test it is glossy, but an anti-glare coating takes the edge off the reflections.

One slightly disconcerting thing we noticed about the Toshiba Satellite L755D-12L is that when you press the power button to turn it on, there is an eerie silence – no fans spring in to life, no light comes on under the power button, theres no beeping noise and the screen stays dark for several seconds. This means you can think that youve not pressed hard enough, and press again, switching the unit off. This is a minor quibble though.

Toshiba Satellite L735-S3220RD Full Review: A Good Deal on a Budget Laptop?

 On the bright side, the Toshiba Satellite L735-S3220RD is an entry level notebook with good performance thanks to the Intel Core i5-2410M dual-core processor and enough memory. It also has a fashionable design thats light enough to travel with. On the other hand, the notebook was only able to provide about three and a half hours of battery life and has an all-plastic, somewhat flimsy construction.
Build and Design
Like most of the entry level notebooks in the Toshiba Satellite series, the new 13.3-inch Satellite L735-S3220RD is made almost entirely out of molded plastics and has the familiar rounded clamshell construction on the display lid and around the chassis. This notebook sports a red and black dot matrix design with a glossy Toshiba Fusion finish. The glossy finish embodies the display cover, screen surround, keyboard, and palmrests. To add a touch of style, the area just below the LCD has a bumpy textured feel to it along with the dot matix design. The overall dimensions are 12.95” x 8.7” x 1.10”~1.45”, and it weighs 4.6 pounds without the battery. This notebook is meant to appeal to those who want to have a travel-friendly notebook with a slightly bigger screen size than your typical ultraportable netbook.
All in all, the structure and design of the Toshiba Satellite L735-S3220RD is made to fit the average budget-conscious consumers needs while on the go. The design is quite stylish, even though the glossiness tends to collect fingerprints easily almost entirely throughout. Our only question now is, how will its build and construction hold up while traveling?
Pressing down with a good amount of pressure in the center of the keyboard resulted in the chassis giving way; this is due to the all-plastic construction. Although it didnt dip down horribly, it was certainly still noticable and might be a problem with users who normally press down hard while typing. The area above the keyboard and beneath the display gave way even more when we pressed down on it, which may cause problems while traveling. Likewise, the display lid flexed too much for comfort and caused "ripples" when bending the corners inward. The palmrests and bottom of the notebook were the only areas with firm construction. Overall, though, the build quality is not what we would call travel-friendly and it is of questionable durability--the notebook could be easily scratched or beaten up if you are a heavy traveler.
The L735 is somewhat upgradeable and getting to the hardware that you can upgrade is simple: remove two screws and pull upward on the access panel and you can remove the Toshiba hard drive and RAM. The L735 has two RAM slots for up to 8GB of memory.
Ports and Features
The ports and features selection on the L735 is considerably above average. It has HDMI, VGA, three USB 2.0 ports, and an 8-in-1 memory card reader (not to mention a Blu-ray player). On the downside, it does not has a USB 3.0 port or eSATA. The memory card reader supports SD, SDHC, SDXC, miniSD, microSD, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, and Multi Media Card formats. Strangely enough, you will not be able to notice the memory card reader unless you lift the notebook up...its nearly beneath the chassis.

Build and Design
I have something of a mixed opinion about the design of the new Satellite A660/A665 notebook. Since its a "refresh" of the existing Satellite A660/A665 series the new A665-S5176 looks virtually identical to the A665 model we reviewed last year. The only significant changes worth mentioning are the use of a new Intel "Sandy Bridge" processor with improved Intel integrated graphics and a few subtle changes to the ports on the side of the notebook. The design of the A665 remains quite traditional with sculpted edges, a mixture of smooth and textured glossy plastics, and some attractive LED accent lighting. Although the design isnt particularly exciting, keeping essentially the same design makes production easier and cheaper for Toshiba ... meaning Toshiba can pass those cost savings to you.

The exterior of the A665 is covered in what Toshiba calls the "Fusion X2 Finish in Charcoal." As I said it my review of last years A665, the finish is basically just black glossy plastic with a textured "chain" pattern imprinted in the surface to help hide fingerprints and dirt. Despite the silly marketing name for the finish, the texture is much better than a smooth glossy lid. The textured chain pattern gives you the modern look of the glossy plastics but doesnt look like a horrible magnet for smudges, dirt, or whatever a family member spills on the laptop.
